when the raging winds stir, he draws in their breath.

A lover who, whenever the wind blows gently,

is set ablaze by it with longing's fire.

A companion of sleeplessness, ceaselessly restless,

he watches stars in the river of the Milky Way.

when he drifts off drowsily in the last hours of night.

for a phantom, hoping it will visit him with a greeting.

And once he would not accept union with one

who greeted him without love, but only with one who greeted him enamored.

and parting's swift riding-camels have ranged, trotting with long strides,

and the mountains of al-Sham stand between me and desires

for which I brandished a spear and drew a keen-edged sword?

our scattered union again by bringing us together,

so I may behold in him the full moon beneath a dark canopy

of hair, raised high above the straight lance,

and sip from his mouth pure water, blended

with tawny wine that entices the most resolutely chaste?

O you who granted me union, why have you become my forsaker?

And O you who honored me, why have you grown weary of me?

Do you wound me—you whose love once was

a balm for my heart against the wound of estrangement?

You drew away from me where love had brought you near,

so, by staying away, you made me swallow sap bitter as colocynth.

over my liver, for fear that it may be wounded.

and give myself to longing for you, generously.

And I, however long the separation, will surely preserve

the pledges of a time that has passed and ended.

perhaps, with your greeting as my healer, I may find a cure,

and be delivered from the sickness of estrangement.
