فيin اشتغالٍpreoccupation بخمرةٍwith wine وخُمارِand a hangover
Life has passed, and the nights are on loan,
In preoccupation with wine and hangovers,
بينamong ساقٍa cupbearer ومطربٍand a singer ونديمٍand a boon companion
وأقاحٍand daisies ونرجسٍand narcissi وبهارِand yellow oxeyes
Among cupbearer, singer, and boon companion,
And daisies, narcissi, and yellow oxeyes,
بقناعٍwith a veil منof الجهالةِignorance ضافٍample
ورداءٍand a robe منof الشبابِyouth مُعارِborrowed
With an ample veil of ignorance,
And a borrowed robe of youth.
أيُّwhat عقلٍsense لمنfor one who يروحُgoes in the evening ويغدوand goes in the morning
بينbetween سُكرِthe intoxication of الهوىpassion وسُكرِand the intoxication of العُقارِwine
What sense has one who goes about, evening and morning,
Between the intoxication of passion and the intoxication of wine?

رِcompletion of 'life' علىupon غيرِother than عِفَّةٍchastity واستتارِand concealment
Alas for me—how life's course has slipped away
Without chastity or concealment.
وصِغارُand little اللَّذَّاتِpleasures ولَّتhave passed وأبقتand have left behind
حَسراتٍregrets علىover ذنوبٍsins كبارِgreat
And little pleasures have passed, leaving
Regrets over great sins.

Would that, when they carried off my life's bloom,
They had not weighed me down with crushing burdens of sin.
ليسthere is not ليfor me بعدهاafter them سوىexcept زفراتٍsighs
يتصاعدنَthey rise عنfrom ضلوعٍribs حِرارِburning
After them, I have nothing but sighs
That rise from burning ribs,
وسُهادٍand sleeplessness اذاwhen اللَّواحظُthe eyes أغفتhave dozed off
واستباقٍand racing مِنof الدموعِtears الغِزارِcopious
And sleeplessness when eyes fall asleep,
And copious tears racing one another.
فلعلّيso perhaps I أُطفيmay quench لهيبَthe blaze of الخطاياsins
بانسكابٍwith an outpouring منof مائهاtheir water المِدرارِabundantly flowing
So perhaps I may quench the blaze of sins
With an outpouring of their abundant water.
واذاand when ماever (emphasis) تعجَّبَmarvel الناسُthe people منّيat me
قلتُI say قولاًa statement فصلاًdecisive بغيرِwithout اعتذارِapology
And whenever people marvel at me,
I make a decisive statement, without apology:
أيُّwhat بِدعٍnovelty أنابهُrepentance (apparent intended reading) منfrom مُنيبٍa penitent
جاءَhas come مستغفراًseeking forgiveness الىto غَفّارِthe All-Forgiving
"What is strange in the repentance of a penitent
Who has come to the All-Forgiving seeking forgiveness?"
