O You who are feared and looked to with hope,

to You I flee for refuge from fear of You.

I have come, O my Master, seeking forgiveness

for the evil of deeds grown frail and tottering.

I mounted patience’s aged camel, heading toward

    the temperate wilderness of contentment.

I journey, with knowledge before me; whenever

I fear going astray, it makes the path clear.

Fear leads me, humbled, just as

the glory of hope urges my aspirations onward.

I passed off sham deeds in secret,

and I fear You will not accept the counterfeit.

And I said, O my Master, seeking intercession,

the words of one who mumbled in his speech:

O Guide of the one sent from Hashim,

endowed with valor and kindness, master of wisdom,

admit me, O God, through the gate of contentment,

and be my deliverer from hardship,

that I may place my hope in it when I turn toward it—

far be it that such a gate should be shut!
