And a companion whose company taught me goodness,

a great scholar in the disciplines of tradition and rational inquiry,

beckoned me to listen to his words—

to meanings like pearls strung upon a thread.

He said, “Listen as I recount God's attributes,

so you may become a leader of nomads and settled folk.

And look at the beauty visible in His handiwork,

for it offers lessons to all who take heed.”

So I said, “Leave me; I am too occupied to heed you—

with His face, heedless of my soul's desire and my own wish.

My heart is journeying in His majesty,

so it heeds neither my hearing nor my sight.”
