Her phantom traveled by night through a barren wilderness,

and arrived as the face of the east smiled.

It came to join me after forsaking me,

and sweet is union's blessing after the pain of estrangement.

It came in sleep after union had been hard to attain,

so its night journey replaced hardship with ease.

In a dream, I seemed to hold her reins,

pillowing her on my palm and making my chest her bed.

So all night I saw in her figure and beauty

a bough on a sand dune, swaying beneath the full moon's radiance.

The darkness of her hair drew back from her face's light,

as night's bosom split open to reveal the bright dawn.

And all night she gazed at me with a languid eye

that, when drowsy, overflows with the enchantment it has decreed.

Then she laughs coquettishly and weeps in sorrow,

and I marvel at two kinds of pearls, strung and scattered.

She takes me strolling in the garden of her cheek,

and gives me sips of her saliva—water mixed with wine.

She beguiles me with clear wine from it,

pleasant to the taste, fragrant in scent.

Then its sweet fragrance sends a tremor through me,

as a tipsy man sways, reeling with intoxication.

We passed the night's darkness in a long embrace,

cheek upon cheek and lips upon lips,

the embrace of two lovers seeking it

to cool the heat they had been made to bear.

And each harbors a blaze of love for the other—

and can blazing embers be quenched with embers?

Then, when night's black steed turned and fled,

and dawn's rose-red steed came following its trail,

I left the bliss in which I had found comfort,

and returned to the grievous affliction I endure.

Time's vicissitudes saw that I was noble and filled me with dread—

thus do time's vicissitudes treat the noble.
