Of love's wine, not of a brew of grain,

    I drank—a wine honey-sweet to the taste.

A trustworthy man generously passes it round among us,

With no stinginess toward the drinkers on his part.

But its worth has exalted its station,

So it cannot be attained without good fortune and perseverance.

Its fragrance touches no young man's heart

Except the heart of a discerning, noble, gallant man.

Nor are raptures seen in minds through it,

Except in a sound, penetrating, discerning mind.

O cupbearer of the drinkers, bring it forth well aged,

From its eternal, fragrant, spacious wine-jar.

    Luminous—through it minds behold

The unseen things concealed in East and West.

And give me its cup, unmixed and brimming,

In gardens that unveil love to the lovelorn,

Gardens of glory, too exalted ever to be viewed

As defined by distance and nearness.

Their beauty cannot be grasped by the eye of the face,

But by the twin eyes of the heart's regard.

Those heights—their shade is ample, and their watering-place

Is clear; their spring pasture flourishes, free of [unclear].

So take it, my boon companion; I am enraptured

By song without melody or beat.
