They say to me, when my age has driven me backward:
They say to me, as my years draw me backward,
“Keep back from the noble, mettlesome steeds amid the valiant.”
Give up the fleet steeds when terror strikes.

Is that because I was seen galloping
Is that because I was seen galloping
on a dust-gray old mount, pursuing the dust-colored game?
On the old, dust-colored she-camel, pursuing tawny gazelles?

عن الفتكةِ العذراءِ والناهِدِ البِكرِ
Though after all my ardor I now have a spell of languor,
And, after ardor, I feel my eagerness wane
holding me from an unprecedented onslaught—and a budding-breasted virgin.
For the maiden stroke of daring and the budding-breasted virgin?

Is it out of fear for me, now that my lifetime has disclosed
Is it fear for him, when his time has revealed
a dawn and a night within a sky of hair?
A morning and a night in a sky of hair?

The head's mouth smiled, white with gray hair,
and made the heart’s eyes weep tears of red.
And made the heart's eyes weep red tears.

So I said: Leave me be; I am indeed seasoned,
an old man’s hunting is not like an untried youth’s.
For a mature man's hunting is not like a callow youth's.

I have long known my hand to be an expert huntress
Indeed, I have known my hand to be a keen hunter
of whatever flies in open sky or ranges the wilderness:
Of whatever flew in the air and whatever walked in the wilderness.

And if gray steeds came charging,

Galloping now in retreat and now in attack,

I saw its deftness in both states,
at the manes of seasoned steeds poised at rest, and in successful feats—
With dun, full-grown, poised steeds, and with stout lances.

Though this age has worn away my freshness,
once, through me, it vaunted itself above the radiant stars.
Indeed, through me it once vaunted itself above the radiant stars.

It came, through their radiance, to strut in the jewels of pride.
