أتاني هواها قبلَ أن أعرفَ الهوى
فصادفَand found قلبيmy heart فارغاًempty فتمكَّناand took firm hold
فصادفَ قلبي فارغاً فتمكَّنا
Her love came to me before I knew love.
It found my heart empty and took firm hold.
فطرتُI was born علىwith حبِّيmy love لهاfor her وألفتُهُand grew accustomed to it
فطرتُ على حبِّي لها وألفتُهُ
ولاand no بدَّescape أنthat ألقىI meet بهِwith it اللَهGod معلناopenly professing it
ولا بدَّ أن ألقى بهِ اللَه معلنا
I was born loving her and grew accustomed to that love.
And I must meet God with it, openly professing it.
ولمand did not يخلُdepart مِنfrom قلبيmy heart هواهاher love بقدرِto the extent ماthat
ولم يخلُ مِن قلبي هواها بقدرِ ما
أقولُI say أتاهُit came to it فارغاًempty فتمكَّناand took firm hold
أقولُ أتاهُ فارغاً فتمكَّنا
Nor has her love ever left my heart long enough
For me to say, 'It reached my empty heart and took firm hold.'
