    The fast departed amid losses,

as the feast dawned with varied delights.

So I found myself between this and that,

    my thoughts divided among concerns.

    أستقبلُ الفِطرَ بالمجونِ

    I bid the fast farewell in dignity;

I welcome the feast with wanton revelry.

My sorrow for that faithful one

matches my delight in this treacherous one.

I commend to God the one who departed,

taking my steadfast, sober reason with him.

And welcome, welcome, a warm welcome

to the one my madness brought to me,

to the one who came bearing joy

    to every sorrowful lover.

    فاستقبلوا مُطلقَ السُّجونِ

    He freed potent wine from her prison;

so welcome the one who opens prisons.

Do you not see her, now revealed

beneath the banner of her manifest victory?

The armies of cares fled when

she charged upon them from ambush.

Then bring her, wine whose fragrance

is like a waft of treasured ambergris,

wine that was with Time at its beginning,

    before its division into years,

like Jupiter settled among the Pleiades,

from the hand of a slender-waisted enchantress,

as lovely as the full moon, with a figure

like a bough in slenderness and suppleness.

She sang a song to her oud,

    in her enrapturing, plaintive voice,

that made faded youth new again

and plunged the carefree heart into sorrows.

And look at the garden, how it has become

in beauty's prime before the eyes.

    Its silvered blossoms shine there

with golden ones among the boughs.

And the daisies' smiles have appeared

at the weeping of the pouring rain.

And the great trees have appeared in a cloak

    of precious green silk.

Rain has brought forth in its sky

    stars of roses and jasmine.

So seek wine early, and take her as your companion,

to the song of the bird among the boughs.

And hasten to enjoy life; seize it

    before Death snatches you away.
