How sweet was a day gone by at the monastery of Darin,
In the company of slender beauties, on Palm Sunday.

And the Catholicos was penitent at his altar,
Among the priests and the devout monks.

He favored his chosen among the people of his faith
After prayer, by sharing out the offerings.

While he reminded them of what they had forgotten through
His recounting of the apostles' sayings,
اذwhen أقبلتshe approached غادةٌa maiden كالبدرِlike the full moon مرهفةٌdelicate

A delicate maiden approached, like the full moon,
Gazing with the eyes of an oryx in a wide-eyed herd.
فوجهُهاand her face قمرٌa moon أوفىrose high علىabove غُصُنa branch

And her face was a moon rising above a bough
That swayed over a sand mound among the dunes of Yabrin.

She came to his cup, swaying in her slenderness,
As a moringa bough sways in its suppleness.
I invoked protection for her حينَwhen جاءتهُshe came to him مُيمِّمةٌheading toward him
مِنagainst كلِّevery عينٍevil eye بطاسينٍwith Ta-Sin وياسينِand Ya-Sin
I invoked protection for her as she came toward him,
Against every evil eye, with Ta-Sin and Ya-Sin.

So she frowned, then said in anger,
'Why did you not seek protection through Yunan and Yanin?'

كماas يُقوّسُhe curves حسنُone skilled in الخطِّcalligraphy فيin النونِthe letter nun
And she arched her eyebrows when she grew angry,
As a fine calligrapher curves the letter nun.

Then magic, from the pupil of her eye, nocked
An unerring arrow, and never ceases to shoot at me.

Never did she appear before one steadfast in his faith
Who left her still steadfast and unbewitched.

I remained bewildered by love for her, in a daze,
Answering her herald, who extols her, with 'Amen.'

You bound me when you breathed magic into my mind;
O idol of the monastery, unbind me and set me free.

The winds of love for you set the ships of my knowledge sailing
Into ignorance's deep waters, until they drowned my faith.

Is it lawful, then, in the faith of Christ,
For you to detain me, though guiltless, to bring me to ruin?
لولاwere it not for اعتصاميmy holding fast بحبلِto the rope of الدّينِfaith قلتُI would have said لهاto her
انif كانَthere is عندكِwith you زُنّارٌa Christian girdle فَشُدّينيthen bind me
But for my clinging to the rope of faith, I would have said to her:
'If you have a Christian girdle, bind me with it.'
