يظلُّremains بهاin it الخرِّيتُthe expert guide يحدوdrives onward بِهِhim الجهلُignorance
Ah, by my love for her, which leaves me in a trackless wilderness,
When she left me forlorn in Tinufa
where even the expert guide is driven onward by ignorance,
The sand grouse lingers there, the ignorant man sings to it
كمرتكبٍlike one undertaking أمراًan affair جليلاًmomentous يسومُهُhe seeks it
فأسلمهُthen forsook him الهاديthe guide وزلّتand slipped بهِbeneath him النّعلُthe sandal
like one embarking on a momentous affair he seeks,
Like one committing a grave deed that leads him astray
whose guide then forsook him, and whose sandal slipped beneath him.
So I let go of the guide and my slipper slipped off
لقدindeed تركتنيshe has left me فيin هواهاlove for her كعُروةٍlike ʿUrwah
وانand though كانَis مِثليone like me لاnot يكونُthere is لهfor him مِثلُan equal
Indeed, she has left me, in my love for her, like ʿUrwah,
She left me in love for her like a lone tree
though one like me has no equal.
And one like me can have no equal
O you who ask me وصلاًunion وفيwhile in القلبُthe heart حاجةٌa longing
الىfor وصلِunion أُخرىanother woman ماnot يُنهنِهُهاrestrains it النّبلُarrows
O you who ask me for union, while in my heart is a longing
I seek connection through my questions, and my heart desires
for union with another woman, which arrows cannot restrain:
Another connection not inhibited by nobility
لقدindeed رمتُI sought أعافاunclear; perhaps 'aid' تقاضتهُdemanded it رحمةٌcompassion
فجاذَبنيthen tugged at me الشّوقُlonging المبرِّحِagonizing والخبلand madness
Indeed, I sought [to offer aid?], as compassion demanded,
I begged for mercy, mercifulness pulled me back
but agonizing longing and madness tugged at me.
Passionate longing and raving madness wrestled me
وزرتكِand I visited you لكنّيbut I انثنيتُturned back وذوand one possessed of الهوىlove
الىto حيثُwhere يهوىdesires القلبُthe heart تمشيwalks بهwith him الرجلthe foot
And I visited you, but turned back; and the lover—
I visited you, but I turned away, and one in love
his foot carries him wherever his heart desires.
Goes where the heart inclines, the legs walking it there
