    The deaths of knights

    in the battle of estrangement,

    from the charmer’s glance,

    are inscribed upon my breast.

    O tame fawn,

why, then, do you seem skittish,

    when you have always sheltered

in the heart and the eye?

Then he said to me, “Be at ease [uncertain reading],

    O treacherous liar!

It is a habit of gazelles

    in the barren wilderness,

    when they see a human,

    to flee far away.”

I saw him, when he returned,

amid the gathering of good cheer,

    passing it round—a wine

    that toys with the soul—

a full moon that blotted out the full moon,

    going round with the sun.

    His gracefully swaying figure

    quivers with suppleness,

    like a branch—a myrtle branch—

    among Yabrin’s dunes.

He sang, and the people were enraptured

by the sweetness of his singing.

    He has awakened love

    with his drowsy gaze,

    to take the heart captive

    from the stronghold of forgetfulness.

So I said, when he mustered

    the battalions of estrangement:

    The reproacher said to me,

    when love went too far,

    “The valiant lion

is led by the gazelle herd.”

So I said, “O ignorant one,

    the heart is the judge.”

And it nearly happened—or the time had already come—

and he said by way of excuse:

    “I fear, in estrangement,

    the rending of the veil.”
