ماnot استصرخَcalled upon for help الصَّبرَpatience قلبيmy heart وهوwhile it was مذعورُterrified
الاexcept وقدand already سلبتهُhad stolen it الأعينُthe eyes الحورُbright-white, dark-pupilled
My heart, terrified, never cried to patience for help
My heart did not beg for patience, though it was distraught,
except when the bright, dark-pupilled eyes had already stolen it.
Except that the beautiful eyes had robbed it,
ولاnor سبىtook captive خاطريmy thoughts جفنٌan eyelid لهit has غُنُجٌcoquettish charm
الاexcept وصارمُهُand its keen sword بالسِّحرِby magic مشهورُunsheathed
Nor did a coquettish eyelid ever capture my thoughts
Nor did an eyelid enslave my spirit, possessing charm,
except with its keen sword unsheathed by magic.
Except that its sword was notorious for sorcery.
أفديI would ransom التيher who صيَّرتshe made قلبيmy heart بهاbecause of her دنِفاًlovesick
فرقُafraid of السوالفِthe sidelocks يُلقىis found وهوwhile it is مأسورُcaptive
I would ransom her who made my heart lovesick for her.
I sacrifice her who made my heart submissive to her,
Fearing her sidelocks, it is found captive.
While gossip is discarded and it remains captured.
ورديةُrosy الخدِّof cheek فيهاwithin her معتَّقةٌaged wine
مِنfrom سكرهاits headiness نرجسُthe narcissus الأجفانِof the eyelids مخمورُdrunk
Rosy-cheeked, she has aged wine within her;
The roseiness of her cheek in it is emancipated,
from its headiness, the narcissus of her eyelids is drunk.
From its inebriation the narcissus of her eyelids is intoxicated.
قدindeed خيَّمَpitched its tent السِّحرُmagic فيin أجفانِthe eyelids of ناظرِهاher eye
والسِّحرُand magic فيماin whatever لهit has فيin القلبِthe heart تأثيرُan effect
Magic has pitched its tent in the eyelids of her eye,
Sorcery has pitched its tent in her gazing eyes,
and magic lies in whatever has an effect upon the heart.
And magic in what it has of influence on the heart.
يحلوis sweet هواهاlove for her وانand even if أجرتshe shed دميmy blood عَبَثاًfor sport
ولاand not أباليI care فإنَّfor indeed الموتَdeath مقدورُordained
Love for her is sweet, even if she spills my blood for sport;
Her love is sweet even if she wrongfully sheds my blood,
and I do not care, for death is ordained.
And I do not care since death is predestined.
لولاwere it not for سَناهاher radiance وخدّاهاand her two cheeks لماwould not have عُبِدَتbeen worshipped
كماas تَعبَّدتُهاI worshipped her نارٌfire ولاnor نورُlight
But for her radiance and her cheeks, there would have been no worship
If it were not for her radiance and her cheek, she would not have been
of fire or light like the worship I have given her.
Worshipped by me like fire or light are worshipped.
