What a marvel! O men!
How strange are men!
So hear an account of my plight.
Listen to my state.

Many a day I wandered,
Many a day I have spent
pursuing my doom through my own wiles.
Hunting my prey by guile.

I remained afflicted by a gazelle
I remained desiring a gazelle
grazing in the meadow of coquetry.
Grazing in meadows of beauty.

He sways gracefully with a stature
Swaying with a slender shape
like towering lances.
Like the pliant boughs of eucalyptus.

He bends in self-admiration, with a neck
Bending in wonder at a beautiful face
bare of jewels, yet adorned with beauty.
While my heart pined in passion.

فاعلٌdoing فعلَthe work of النِّصالِarrowheads
He looks toward me with an eye
Glancing at me with an eye
that does the work of arrowheads.
That works like a sharp arrow.

So he shot at me from a languid eye
He pierced my ailing heart
with sound arrows.
With his healthy, potent arrows.

So marvel at one afflicted with sickness,
Marvel how one who was sick
grown sound at the hour of archery!
Regained health at time of trial!

I wanted him beside me as captive prey,
I discarded him like a shirt
shuffling in the fetters of my wealth.
Rent by grief for my money.

I kept my mind at work
I deliberated in my thoughts
for a while, until it came to me.
For a time until he came to me.

And for my wish I carefully sought
I questioned him carefully
the moment for a request's fulfillment.
To understand his request.

Then I approached him
with cunning and effort,
With guile and pretense,

Like an archer who shoots arrows
but he flung me into the mountains.
And hit him in the mountains.

How can a gazelle be hunted
"How can one hunt a gazelle
by one who has become a gazelle's prey?
Who will become the hunted tomorrow?"
