ثَكِلتِmay you be bereaved of دُرَيداًDurayd إِنif أَتَتcomes لَكِto you شَتوَةٌa winter
سِوىother than هَذِهِthis one حَتّىuntil تَدورَcome round الدَوائِرُthe turns of fate
May you be bereaved of Durayd if a winter comes to you
May my mother lose me if another winter comes
Other than this one, until the turns of fate come round.
Except this one, until the cycles are completed,
وَشَيَّبَand turned gray رَأسيmy head قَبلَbefore حينِthe time of مَشيبِهِits graying
بُكاؤُكِyour weeping عَبدَAbd (servant) اللَهِAllah (God) وَالقَلبُand the heart طائِرُfluttering
And my head was turned gray before its time
And my hair turned gray before its time
By your weeping for Abd Allah, while the heart fluttered.
From your crying, O Abdullah, with a fluttering heart,
إِذاif أَناI حاذَرتُguard against المَنِيَّةَdeath بَعدَهُafter him
فَلاthen may … not وَأَلَتescape نَفسٌa soul عَلَيهاfor it أُحاذِرُI fear
If I guard against death after him,
If I were to avoid death after it,
Then may the soul I fear for find no escape.
I swear no soul can avoid it.
