Maʿshar lies desolate, emptied of its people,
and the basin of Suwayqah, and al-Asfar,
فَجَزعُand the valley bend of الحُلَيفِal-Hulayf إِلىto واسِطٍWasit
فَذَلِكَand that مُبدىًa desert camp وَذاand this مَحضَرُa settled dwelling
and the valley bend of al-Hulayf as far as Wasit.
That is a desert camp, and this a settled dwelling.
فَأَبلِغso tell سُلَيماًSulaym وَأَلفافَهاand its allied clans
وَقَدand perhaps يَعطِفُstirs sympathy النَسَبُkinship الأَكبَرُthe greater
So tell Sulaym and its allied clans—
and the greater bond of kinship may stir sympathy—
بِأَنّيthat I ثَأَرتُtook vengeance بِإِخوانِكُمfor your brothers
وَكُنتُand I was كَأَنّيas though I بِهاin doing so مُخفِرُa violator of safe-conduct
that I have avenged your brothers,
and in doing so I seemed to violate safe-conduct.
صَبَحناwe raided at dawn فَزارَةَFazarah سُمرَbrown القَناthe spear shafts
فَمَهلاًso be calm فَزارَةُFazarah لاdo not تَضجَرواyou grow impatient
We raided Fazarah at dawn with brown-shafted spears.
So be calm, Fazarah; do not grow impatient.
وَأَبلِغand tell لَدَيكَwith you بَنيthe sons of مازِنٍMazin
فَكَيفَso how الوَعيدُthe threat وَلَمand not تَقرِرواyou stood firm
And tell the sons of Mazin there with you:
how can you threaten, when you did not stand firm?
فَإِنso if تَقتُلواyou kill فِتيَةًyoung men أُفرِدواthey were isolated
أَصابَهُمُovertook them الحينُdoom أَوor تَظفَرواyou prevail
So if you kill young men left alone,
whom doom overtook, or gain a victory,
فَإِنَّthen indeed حِزاماًHizam لَدىat مَعرَكٍa battlefield
وَإِخوَتَهُمand their brothers حَولَهُمaround them أَنسُرُvultures
then Hizam, upon a battlefield,
and their brothers have vultures all around them.

And on the day of Yazid of Banu Nashib,
and earlier, your elder Yazid—

وَرَهطَand the clan of لَقيطٍLaqit فَلاso do not تَفخَرواyou boast
we roused the rescuer of Banu Nashib,
and Laqit's clan—so do not boast.
تَجُرُّpull الضِباعُthe hyenas بِأَوصالِهِمat their limbs

وَيَلقَحنَand they conceive فيهِمamong them وَلَمand not يُقبَرواthey were buried
Hyenas tug at their limbs,
and conceive among them, while they lie unburied.
