قَتَلناwe slew بِعَبدِin vengeance for ʿAbd اللَهِAllāh خَيرَthe finest of لِدانِهِhis age-mates
قَتَلنا بِعَبدِ اللَهِ خَيرَ لِدانِهِ
وَخَيرَand the finest of شَبابِthe young men of الناسِhumankind لَوif ضُمَّwere gathered أَجمَعاall together
وَخَيرَ شَبابِ الناسِ لَو ضُمَّ أَجمَعا
In vengeance for ʿAbd Allāh, we slew the finest of his peers,
We killed with Abdullah the best of his people
And the finest of mankind’s young men, were they all gathered together:
And the best of the youths of men, were they gathered together
ذُؤابَDhuʾāb بنَson of أَسماءَAsmāʾ بنِson of زَيدِZayd بنِson of قارِبٍQārib
ذُؤابَ بنَ أَسماءَ بنِ زَيدِ بنِ قارِبٍ
مَنيَّتُهُhis death أَجرىhe spurred on إِلَيهاtoward it وَأَوضَعاand galloped swiftly
مَنيَّتُهُ أَجرى إِلَيها وَأَوضَعا
Dhuʾāb son of Asmāʾ son of Zayd son of Qārib.
Dhu'aib son of Asma son of Zayd son of Qarib
Toward his death he spurred on and galloped swiftly.
His death flowed to it and fell
فَتىa young man مِثلُlike مَتنِthe flat of السَيفِthe sword يَهتَزُّhe quivers لِلنَدىfor generosity
فَتى مِثلُ مَتنِ السَيفِ يَهتَزُّ لِلنَدى
كَعالِيَةِlike the upper shaft of الرِمحِthe spear الرُدَينِيِّRudaynī أَروَعاawe-inspiring
كَعالِيَةِ الرِمحِ الرُدَينِيِّ أَروَعا
A youth like the flat of a sword, quivering with eagerness to give,
A young man like the blade of a sword that trembles with dew
Like the upper shaft of a Rudaynī spear, awe-inspiring.
Like the high spear, brilliant and magnificent
