بِشُبّانٍwith young men ذَويpossessed of كَرَمٍnobility وَشيبِand gray-haired men
I summoned the clan of Nasr, and they raised a shout,
with noble young men and gray-haired elders,
عَلىon جُردٍsleek horses كَأَمثالِlike the forms of السَعاليshe-ghouls
وَرَجلٍand foot soldiers مِثلِlike أَهمِيَةِflowing sands الكَثيبِthe dune
on sleek horses like she-ghouls,
and foot soldiers like the flowing sands of a dune.
فَماso not جَبُنواthey showed cowardice وَلَكِنّاbut we نَصَبناwe leveled
صُدورَthe points of الشَرعَبِيَّةِthe Shar‘abi spears لِلقُلوبِat the hearts
They were no cowards, yet we leveled
the points of Shar‘abi spears at their hearts.
فَكَمso how many غادَرنَthey left behind مِنof كابٍone fallen face-first صَريعٍstruck down
يَمُجُّhe spews نَجيعَdark blood جائِفَةٍa body-piercing wound ذَنوبِprofusely bleeding
How many they left fallen face-first, struck down,
spewing dark blood from a deep, gushing wound!
وَتِلكُمand that (addressing you all) عادَةٌa custom لِبَنيof the sons of رَبابٍRabab
إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle كانَwas مَوتٌdeath مِنfrom قَريبِnearby
And such is the custom of the sons of Rabab,
whenever death draws near.
فَأَجلَواso they fled وَالسَوامُand the grazing herds لَناfor us مُباحٌfree for the taking
وَكُلُّand every كَريمَةٍnoble woman خَوٍّtender-bodied (sense uncertain) عَروبِaffectionate to her husband
So they fled, their grazing herds ours for the taking,
and every noble, tender-bodied, loving woman.
وَقَدand indeed تُرِكَwas left اِبنُthe son of بَكرٍBakr فيin مَكَرٍّa battlefield

And the son of Bakr was left on the battlefield,
held captive between a male hyena and a wolf.
