I visited a weathered campsite at Rābigh.

Its traces refused to remain unchanged.

    يَطيرُ سَوادُهُ سَمَلاً جَفَولا

    They were effaced, save for blackened hearthstones standing upright;

Its dark mass scatters in ragged flight.

Its dwellers are gathered herds, among them a sturdy wild ass,

Shedding his loose hair as he fattens.

Whenever he cries, he rattles hoarsely in a bray

And a ringing call, then follows it with another bray.

    And ostriches with white-marked bellies,

And wide-eyed wild cows grazing on its herbs.

I halted my companions there at the height of day,

Holding back my eye’s tears, lest they flow.

Listen: tell the slanderers among men that I

Will be their witness against myself:

For I have forsaken union with Hind,

And my love for her has been replaced by forgetfulness.

So if I do what you wish concerning her,

I have indeed disobeyed her for a long time.

You will neither bear my like nor have my like wed you,

When a parching, stripping wind drives the chaff,

And the lands grow barren and turn dust-gray,

And rainfall becomes scarce and scant.

For, if you ask the nobles of my people,

When their war has brought forth a camel-calf,

Do I not ready full-length mail and a sturdy horse,

And a double-edged sword, unsheathed and polished,

And pardon their fool, and honor

The words of one among them whom I deem a friend?

Beside the ravine he presses me: whenever

One troop passes through it, he sees another.

And we are clans who went forth as kings,

Undoing the fetters of the shackled.

Whenever you come to our assembly, you will find us

    Mighty chiefs, munificent, mature men,

And young men who, when alarmed, don

Full-length mail whose skirts they drag behind them.
