أَباO father of ذُفافَةَDhufāfah مَنwho لِلخَيلِfor the cavalry إِذطُرِدَتwhen it was driven back
فَاِضطَرَّهاand forced it الطَعنُspear-thrusts فيinto وَعثٍsoft, treacherous ground وَإِرجافِand panic
O Abū Dhufāfah, who was there for the cavalry when it was driven back,
and spear-thrusts forced it into soft, treacherous ground and panic?
ياO فارِسَknight of الخَيلِthe cavalry فيin الهَيجاءِbattle إِذwhen شُغِلَتwere occupied
كِلتاboth اليَدَينِhands كَرُواراًcharging repeatedly غَيرَnot وَقّافِone who halts
O knight of the cavalry in battle, when occupied were
both hands—ever charging, never halting.
عَبَرُa stalwart warrior الفَوارِسَthe horsemen مَعروفٌknown بِشَكَّتِهِby his arms and armor
كافٍone who suffices إِذاwhen لَمnot يَكُنthere was فيin كَربَةٍdistress كافيone who suffices
A stalwart among horsemen, known by his arms and armor,
one who sufficed when, in distress, none could suffice.
وَقَدand indeed قَتَلتُI slew بِهِfor him عَبساًʿAbs وَإِخوَتَهاand its kindred
حَتّىuntil شُفيتُI was healed وَهَلbut is قَلبيmy heart بِهِby that شافيhealed
And I have slain ʿAbs and its kindred for him,
until I was healed—but is my heart healed by that?
