Sulaym son of Mansur, have you not yet been told

of what befell in the two wars of Kulayb and Dahis,

and of the blood in the war of al-Yahabir,

freely shed, and the painful mutilation of noses,

and of what befell in Sulaym's two wars, and before them

in the war of Bu'ath—the death of horsemen?

Minds turned foolish in them through ignorance,

and everything green and dry was set ablaze in them.

So restrain Khufaq from the folly of his counsel,

and his companion al-Abbas, before calamities strike.

    وَمَن يَعقِلُ الأَمثالَ غَيرُ الأَكايِسِ

    Otherwise, you are like those who came before you;

and who understands such examples but the wise?
