أَعاذِلُO reproacher إِنَّماonly أَفنىwore away شَبابيmy youth
رُكوبِيَmy riding فيin response to الصَريخِthe cry for help إِلىtoward المُناديthe caller
O reproacher, nothing wore away my youth but
My riding out at the cry for help toward the caller,
مَعَwith الفِتيانِthe young men حَتّىuntil كَلَّgrew weary جِسميmy body
وَأَقرَحَand made sore عاتِقيmy shoulder حَملُbearing النِجادِthe sword-belt
With the young men, until my body grew weary,
And bearing the sword-belt rubbed my shoulder raw.
أَعاذِلُO reproacher إِنَّهُindeed it is مالٌwealth طَريفٌnewly acquired
أَحَبُّdearer إِلَيَّto me مِنthan مالٍwealth تِلادِinherited
O reproacher, it is indeed newly acquired wealth,
Dearer to me than inherited wealth.
أَعاذِلُO reproacher عُدَّتيmy equipment بَدَنيmy coat of mail وَرُمحيand my spear
وَكُلُّand every مُقَلِّصٍlean, long-legged steed شَكِسِunruly القِيادِthe rein
O reproacher, my equipment is my coat of mail and my spear,
And every lean, long-legged steed, unruly at the rein.
وَيَبقىand endures بَعدَafter حِلمِforbearance القَومِthe people حِلميmy forbearance
وَيَفنىand runs out قَبلَbefore زادَprovisions القَومِthe people زاديmy provisions
And my forbearance outlasts the people's forbearance,
And my provisions run out before the people's do.
