فَوَيحَso, alas for اِبنِson of أَكمَةَAkmah ماذاwhat يُريدhe wants
مِنَfrom المُرعَشِthe trembling one الذاهِبِthe worn-out one الأَدرَدِthe toothless one
So alas for Ibn Akmah—what does he want
Alas son of Akme what do you want
From the trembling, worn-out, toothless man?
From the quivering coward who is turning tail?
فَأُقسِمُso I swear لَوif أَنَّthat بيin me قُوَّةًstrength
لَوَلَّتwould surely turn away فَرائُصُهُhis shoulder muscles تُرعِدِquaking
So I swear, if I had strength,
I swear if I had any strength left
He would surely turn away, his shoulder muscles quaking.
His fleeing ribs would quake in dread.
وَياand oh لَهفَanguish نَفسِيَmy soul أَلّاthat … not تَكونbe
مَعيwith me قَوَّةُthe strength of الشارِخِthe young man الأَمرَدِthe beardless one
And oh, my soul's anguish, that I do not have
Oh how I wish I had with me
The strength of a young, beardless man!
The strength of the roaring mighty dragon.
