The fresh cord binding me to Umm Ma'bad has frayed

at last, and she has broken every promise.

She departed, and I could not praise her favors to you,

nor did she hope for a return to us, today or tomorrow.

One of the modest women: her veil does not slip

when she appears, nor is her gait that of one in fetters.

Every torment of a lover I have met,

save that I have not met my death in an ambush,

and that I have not perished suddenly, nor died

suddenly—though my sickbed visitors thought both had befallen me.

It was as though the tribe's laden camels, as the forenoon rose,

at Nasifat al-Shajna', were a herd of Midhwad,

or towering wild fig trees, their trunks spaced apart,

at Shaba, neither beaten for fodder nor lopped.

    وَإِن كانَ عِلمُ الغَيبِ عِندَكِ فَاِرشِدي

    O reproacher, ease some of your blame and be moderate;

if knowledge of the unseen is yours, then guide me.

O my reproacher, every man and his mother's son

is a passing provision, like a rider's traveling stores.

O reproacher, true loss lies in one like Khalid,

not in what a man spends by his own hand.

I said to 'Arid and 'Arid's companions,

and the clan of Banu al-Sawda', with the people as my witnesses,

openly: 'Reckon with two thousand fully armored men,

I told them, 'The allied forces have now

pitched their tents between al-Sitar and Thahmad.'

Yet they did not desist until they saw it charging,

like a swarm of young locusts through every settlement and open waste.

When I saw the cavalry coming head-on, as though

they were locusts racing the wind's course in the early morning,

I gave them my counsel at the bend of al-Liwa,

but they understood the advice only the next forenoon.

When they disobeyed me, I remained one of them, though I could see

their error, and that I myself was not rightly guided.

Am I anything but a man of Ghaziyya? If it goes astray,

I go astray; if Ghaziyya takes the right path, so do I.

    فَلَمّا دَعاني لَم يَجِدني بِقُعدَدِ

    My brother called me, with horsemen between me and him;

when he called me, he did not find me hanging back.

My brother—his mother suckled me with her milk,

at a breast of pure affection between us, never severed.

I came to him while spears were reaching him,

like weaving-combs striking through cloth stretched taut.

I was like a she-camel with a stuffed calf, startled, then turning

toward a dried hide made from a male camel-calf's skin.

I fought the horsemen with my spear to shield him, until they drew back,

and until pitch-black darkness covered me.

I did not leave until their spears pierced me through,

and I was left falling headlong among the splintered spears.

The fighting of a man who aided his brother with his own life

and knows that no man is immortal.

They called to one another: 'The cavalry have killed a horseman!'

I asked, 'Is that fallen man 'Abd Allah?'

If 'Abd Allah has vacated his place,

he was never hesitant, nor unsteady of hand,

nor miserly when the winds howled back and forth

through green thornwood and dry, lopped branches.

The men's clamor draws courage out of him,

and long night journeys, the fine edge of a keen Indian blade.

His waistcloth tucked up, half his shin showing,

patient in hardship, ever climbing heights.

Little did he complain of calamities, keeping in mind

even today the consequences of events tomorrow.

    فَلَمّا عَلاهُ قالَ لِلباطِلِ اِبعَدِ

    He dallied as he would, until gray hair covered his head;

when it covered him, he told frivolity, 'Be gone!'

You see him hollow-bellied, though provisions are there,

ready at hand, and he sets out early in a tattered shirt.

If poverty and hardship touched him, they increased him

in generosity and in spending whatever was in his hand.

When he came down onto open ground, it adorned itself

at the sight of him, like a scattered gathering of women.

    وَمَن يَعلُهُ رُكنٌ مِنَ الأَرضِ يَبعُدِ

    May God never banish you, in life or in death;

yet one covered by a mass of earth is far away.

A leader of wars, he was ever a lookout,

    alert on a curved-backed mount bearing a felt saddle-pad.

Many a sudden raid, between today and yesterday,

I overtook at a gallop on a rangy, powerful, wolf-like steed,

with sound splint-bones, sturdy limbs, and taut hamstrings,

    long-backed, full-chested, with a smooth, slender neck.

    مُنيفٌ كَجِذعِ النَخلَةِ المُتَجَرِّدِ

    Even a tall man of the company cannot reach his cheekstrap's knot;

he towers like the bare trunk of a palm.

I felt as though I relied on a broad-chested lion,

stalking along al-Hubayb's outskirts in plain view.

    وَإِن يَلقَ مَثنى القَومِ يَفرَح وَيَزدَدِ

    Every man he meets alone is his prey;

if he meets men in pairs, he rejoices all the more.

It eased my grief that I never said to him,

'You lied,' nor was I stingy with what my hand possessed.

If days and time bring another turn, you will learn,

sons of Qarib, that we are angry over Ma'bad.
