Lost in the time of bewilderment, guide the perplexed,

1. Lost in the time of bewilderment, guide the perplexed,
And pour your drink for the repentant like a copious rain.

2. Spread your bees in the darkness like stars,
Leaving the disobedient stunned and dazed.

3. Rain down your sermons, for the paths have become muddled,
And guidance in the time of misguidance has become suspect.

4. What are you if majesty does not cloak you,
Captivating hearts and inclining the free?

5. What are you if we do not take you as a refuge
For the wayfarers, and a passage to the truth?

6. What are you if we do not await you as a message
In which knowledge is laid bare, exposing the rejected?

7. Or are you not a full moon in the sky of concealment,
Shining radiantly, are you not the most blossomed?

8. O you old man who travels the lands victoriously,
How long have you wandered them for ages!

9. Lofty as an eagle in its supremacy,
Never has its throne been above the earth,

10. Nor has the dusty firmament ever been empty for it,
So it stooped, feeling cramped!

11. Nor has it ever been like the owls, singing
The hearing of ghosts, unseen and unseeing.

12. But you were a sun in its shining splendor,
Bestowing renewal and dazzling brilliance.

13. And today you've become, along with the nights, a wanderer,
Aimless, alighting neither on a peak nor meadow.

14. Why do I see you drag your step, my master,
Burdened and stumbling between crosses?

15. Like a horse yearning, wandering ignorantly,
A weary spirit, returning back down the slope.

16. Is it old age that has pierced you with its stabs
So you reined in your horses from galloping?

17. Or is it the armor of vain glory in the time
Of undressing and the liberation of slaves?

18. Or have anxieties bent you with their weight
And you wiped your palm, tearfully complaining?

19. You sit mourning the rising to your confidants -
No intimate consoles you, no companion comforts.

20. You preach to the deaf whose right is to be buried,
And eulogize the dead - a sign of invalidity.

21. Praying for the deceased is proof of futility,
And calling the deaf is selling the unsellable.

22. I agonize over the wolves who have crept
Into your sanctuary and trampled the pulpit,

23. And brazenly recited verses of resentment,
Speaking lies and uttering rejections.

24. They recite their litanies in which lies
Speak whilst truth is downtrodden and scorned.

25. They want it crooked, with the excellence of imbeciles,
An effeminate eloquence, and a one-eyed jurisprudence,

26. Like the jester in the court of the king - how
He lowered his gown and slipped down his belt!

27. In vain he tries to dispel the gloom
Of a sullen man or entertain Caesar.

28. But he is the meekness which creation is created upon,
And they took it for granted for ages!

29. O old man, stranger in his land, why not
Depart and traverse a land more blasphemous!

30. For it is majestic to live estranged
And wise to die absolved.

31. And it is foolishness for one of acumen to stay on harm's way
And visit his eyelids while they still see!

32. Depart and leave us be, stranger, for we
Are all traitors to you, and even the firm have retreated.

33. The ape has become a monk among creation
Devoutly practicing religion, and the calf has become a priest!

34. Depart and leave us to the ignominy of our disgrace
Which has appeared from us ugly and repulsive.

35. Ugliness has found in our sullen faces
A homeland, inhabiting it for ages.

36. Falsehood - we are the witnesses born with it,
Deceit - we are the ones who shaped it and depicted it.

37. We are the ones who dance on ropes of sin,
We are the ones who sold the Book readied for trade.

38. Displaying forbidden wares,
And opening up the scriptures for commerce.

39. O old stranger man, I and you
Are both distraught and superstitious.

40. Thirsty we live on tribulations
And wander bleeding from our depths.

41. Poetry has not solved my problems nor
Freed me - alas! Nor has the prison of meter and rhyme.

42. Gloomily I lurk in the obscurity of bewilderment,
A shackled soul and a created heart.

43. The free in the age of tyranny are rejected -
They give so it is denied, or speak so they are accused of lies!

44. So depart, for I too am leaving, perhaps we will
Explore a world that is leafy and blossoming.

45. Love in it is spreading with the breeze,
And purity dwells as a jewel in consciences.

46. Even rocks melt though stubborn,
You'd see snakes burst out from beneath them.

47. Even the night shines though obscuring,
You'd see it appear radiant despite the darkness.

48. I see you smile in the embraces of dawn
A gentle melody flowing to the green horizon.

50. And in you I leaned unto you - what distance
Except seeing you, and some of my fervor that transpired!
