Once shy and retiring,

All decorum expiring?

7. Does musk now betray where they trod,
And all night vigil keeping?

8. Do voices once low, liquid-sweet,
Now shrill in their weeping?

9. Are necklaces loosed or still clasped?
Has virtue remained

10. Or fled from her battlements proud,
By passion unmanned?

11. Their mantles are verses of love
And their faces the moon,

12. Their beach is the sand and the foam
And the waves their typhoon.

13. Have censers with unguents been lit?
Does ruby wine flow?

14. Do cushions invite to delight?
Have inhibitions lain low?

15. A garden it is of rare blooms
Is each beauteous face,

16. With luminous charms and graces
And light interlaced.

17. In meadows of splendor unknown
For months upon years

18. A herd wildly wanders, possessed,
Drunk deep of desires.

19. By day she is veiled lest her hair
Proclaim her amours,

20. Or her eyes, unveiled, night’s dark deeds
Reveal and discours.

21. When her eyes met mine, such desire
Betrayed lovers' pains.

22. She beguiled me with musical voice,
With the vinous cup's stains.
