1. This one sailed off into the sunset
Toward Khryse and the beauteous maiden -
١. هذَا وأُوذِسُ ماضٍ في ضَحِيتَّهِ
الى خَرِيسا وذَاكَ الثَّغرَ مُذ وَصَلا
2. Furled the sail down to the keel, let
The hawsers loose; then, crouching, settled.
٢. طوى الشِّراعَ إلى قَعرِ السَّفينةِ وال
حِبالَ حلَّ وحالاً أَنزَلَ الدَّقَلاَ
3. And stroking now on either side went he,
Backwards, threw oar-blades, while he made all fast
٣. وقام يَجذِفُ لَلمرفا ويَطرَحُ مِر
ساةً ويُوثِقُ شَدَّ الجُمل مُعتَقِلا
4. In the cross-thwarts, bound well the bag's mouth close;
Then brought the ram out, and the sunshine followed -
٤. فأَخرَجَ الذِبحَ والحَسناءُ تَتبَعُهُ
إلى مَقضامِ فبُوسٍ فانثنى وتَلا
5. Up to the altar came the Greek maid Paris.
They rinsed their hands, and took the barley grains up.
٥. أَيا خَرِيسُ اَغامَمنُونُ أَرسَلَنِي
لِرَدِّ بِنتكَ واستدراكِ ما حَصلا
6. In longing Khryses stretched his arms out unto
The lord Apollo, as he called aloud:
٦. لِفيبُسٍ بضحايانا نُقَرِّبُها
جِئنا عَساهُ يُزِيلُ السُّخطَ والعِلَلا
7. "Hear me, God of the silver bow who standest over
Khryse and holy Killa, and rules Tenedos tight
٧. آوى إِليهِ ابنَةً رَقَّت عَواطفُهُ
لها وبَاشرَت الإِغرِيقَةُ العَمَلا
8. With might, o Smintheus! If I ever wrapped pleasant
Gifts for thee in the rich fane, or burnt thighs
٨. صفَوُّا على المَذَبحِ المُزدَانِ ذِبحَهُمُ
ذَرُّوا الشَّعِيرَ وكُلٌ كَفَّهُ غَسَلا
9. Of bulls or goats for thee, this my desire fulfil:
Let now thine arrows avenge these my tears upon
٩. وَللمَّاءِ خَرِيسٌ مَدَّ في لَهَفٍ
يَدَ الضَّرَاعَةِ يَدعُو الربَّ مُبتَهِلا
10. The Danaans!" So he spoke in prayer, and Phœbus Apollo
Heard him, came down from the peaks of Olympus wroth
١٠. يا ربَّ كِلاَّ وَذَا قَوسِ اللُّجَينِ ويا
مولىً بقُوَّتِهِ تِينيذُساً وَصلاَ
11. At heart, bearing on his shoulders the bow and the hooded
Quiver; and shafts clashed on his shoulders in wrath
١١. وَيا وَلِيَّ خَرِيسٍ قَد أَجَبتَ دُعا
دَعَوتُهُ وَبَلَوتَ القَوم شَرَّ بَلا
12. As the god moved; and his coming was like night. Then he sat him
Aloof from the ships, and let fly an arrow; and fearful
١٢. أَجِب سُؤالي وَعَن أَبنَاءِ دَانَوُسٍ
أَزِل وَباءً على أَعناقِهِم ثَقُلا
13. The clash that rose from the silver bow Shocking to listen;
First on the mules he levelled his dart, and onto the quick dogs.
١٣. كذَا دَعا وَأَفُلُّونُ استجَابَ وَهُم
دَعَوا وَذَرُّوا شَعِيراً طَاهِراً فَضُلا
14. Then on themselves he let loose his piercing shafts; and ever
The pyres of the corpses burned thick; and in groups nine days ranged
١٤. والذابِحُ الذِبحَ أَعلى رأسَهُ وكذَا
من بعدِ تَجرِيدِهِ أَفخاذَهُ عَزَلا
١٥. بالشَّحم غَشَّى حَوَاشيها وَأَتبَعَهَا
الأَحشاءَ دامِيةً من فَوقِها وَشَلا
١٦. فأَضرَمَ الشَّيخُ خُشبَاناً مُقَطَّعَةً
وَالخَمرَ صبَّ عَلَيهَا والصِّلا اشتَعَلا
١٧. وَحولَهُبسفَافِيدٍ مُخَمَّسَةٍ
أطرافُهَا فِتيضةُ الإغرِيقِ وَالنُّبَلا
١٨. حَتَّى إِذَا ذَابَتِ الافخَاذُ وَاجتَعَلُوا
باقي الحَشا اقتَسَمُوا اللَّحمَ الَّذِي فَضَلا
١٩. ثُمَّ اشتَوَوهُ وَهَبُّوا للطَّعامِ وَلَم
يَكُن بِهِم قَطُّ شاكٍ لم يَنَل جُعَلا
٢٠. لمَّا اكتَفَوا بِكُؤُوسِ الرَّاح طَافِحَةً
دارُوا وَفِتيَتُهُم قَد رَتَّلَت جَذَلا
٢١. ظَلُّوا نَهَارَهُمُ يَبغُونَ بالنَّغَمِ ال
شادِي تَقَبُّلَ رَبِّ مِنهُمُ انتَفَلا
٢٢. وَعَظَّمُوهُ بأَنشادٍ لَهُ نُظِمَت
فَطابَ نضفساً بِطيبِ اللَّحنِ وَاجتَذَلا
٢٣. والشَّمسُ لمَّا تَوَارت بالغُرُوبِ لدَى
مَرابِطِ الفُلكِ قاموا والظَّلاَمُ عَلا
٢٤. حَتَّى إِذَا اَبرضزَت وَردِيَّ أَنمُلها
بِنتُ الصَّبَاح وَذَاتُ الفَجر مُنجلا
٢٥. عادُوا لِقَومِهِمِ وضالرِيحُ مُسعِفَةٌ
لهُم بِفَيضِ إِلاهٍ ذِبحَهُم قَبِلا
٢٦. هَبُّوا إِلَى نَشرِ مُبيَضّ الشِّرَاعِ على
أَكنَافِ ساريَةٍ ثُمَّ انثنَوا عَجَلا
٢٧. راحُوا ومَركَبُهُم شَقَّ العُبَابَ على
تلاَطُمِ المَوجِ يَدوِي حَولَهُ قُلَلا
٢٨. كادُوا يَطِيرُونض حَتَّى قَومَهُم بَلَغُوا
فَلِلرَّصِيفِ استَجَرُّوا لَمَركَبَ العَجِلا
٢٩. القَوهُ بَينَ عِضَاداتٍ مُثَبَّتَةٍ
وَبَينَ فُلكٍ وضخَيمٍ فُرِّقُوا جُمُلا
