    With my soul I would ransom the full moons I once knew in the sanctuary,

    and days of companionship whose hours were sweet with serenity.

    So, by God, let me weep if I recall them.

    O you who blame me for a tear I have shed

    over parting, and another before it over estrangement:

    واعظم اجري ان الاقي منيَّتي

    Such are my prescribed duties in love, and my customary practice;

    and my greatest reward is to meet my death.

    So how, when this is the nature of my passion and yearning,

    can you seek from me a disposition other than my own,

    and ask of me a path other than mine?
