بحديث محبوب عشقت ولم أرى
The letter arrived, plainly expressed and written out,
The book arrived, clearly written
with news of a beloved I loved but had not seen.
About a beloved I loved but never saw

ظلم المّ به الغرام واسعرا
It came, and its coming was a draught for one
It came with roses that had a delightful fragrance
burdened by oppression, whom passion had assailed and set ablaze.
Whose love pained me and set me aflame

So I broke its seal, and tears had often
tears had flowed before it, never to recur.
Flowed before it, never to dry

ورشفت كاسا من لماه معطرا
I kissed its face, and its mouth shone,
And I kissed its pages, so its cover shone
and sipped a perfumed cup from its dusky lips.
And I sipped a scented cup from its pure water

A lover's creation was offered to the yearning soul;
I dedicate to yearning a youth enamored
from it, breezes of longing wafted ambergris.
Whose longing brought a scent like ambergris

So its lines seemed the tresses of a maiden,
Its lines were like the tresses of a gazelle
a slender one, whose locks showed from Caesar's breast.
That shone from the braids of Caesar

And its page seemed the surface of the face of one
Its pages were like the cheek of a beauty
who possessed beauty, where cheek-down could find no place.
Whose coquetry adorned it with vexation

Or as if its letters were pillows for eyes
giving nectar, repeatedly served and distilled.
That give exquisite and distilled perfume

And I took its pearls for necklaces of pure gold,
The necklaces of its meanings left its prose
or for a beloved's mouth smiling jewels.
Like the smile of a beloved that gleamed pearls

I cultivated over its clouds a cloud of eloquence
had al-Kindi glimpsed them, he would have returned outstripped.
That if heard by Al-Kindi, would make him return

it, would have returned from it abashed, concealing himself.
Would come back from it ashamed and concealing

The breeze softened at the delicacy of its meaning, just as
The gentle breeze was delicate in its meaning
the heart bore witness to its excellence when it read it.
As Al-Fawad witnessed to its merit when he read it

How lovely the lightning that appeared from its face,
O Hasan, lightning from his cheek appeared
shining, bringing tidings of Nasr Fathallah.
About Nasr Fathallah's victory shining news

A spirit of ardent longing arose—may God grant aid—
Nasrallah's youth arose with zeal
and the heart refused to think of any other.
And my heart refused to remember another

A branch of Fathallah, ripening luxuriantly,
A branch of Fathallah most fertile
grew and bore fruit in the garden of letters.
In the garden of literature grew and bore fruit

Thus my heart's name, when it resembled his heart,
And so the name of my heart when it resembled his heart
was fashioned by love's turning when love arose.
The devotion of love built when it was drafted

To you belongs the credit, O you who revealed to me
So to you is ascribed virtue, O you whose love
your affection, though you will not see or behold me.
Appeared to me and will never see or look at me

Come close to the abode where you were
al-Shahba, where Nasrallah has journeyed by night.
And Nasrallah happily walked in it

in ease—and a fuller sigh at being far from you!
