    وتردفني الأشواق وجدا على وجدي

    Remembrance stirs me to passion and burning anguish;

And longings heap yearning upon my yearning.

There came to me, transmitted from ʿUbayd and Shakir,

A report the beauty mark related from the cheek’s page:

Yet kissing smiling lips is an act of devotion,

And closer still is pressing breast to breast.

And in the commentary on the cheek-down’s composition are inscribed

Yaqut’s tales, penned with a perfumed substance.

So, for whoever seeks a kiss, ʿUbayd has dark-tinted lips:

Gentle in speech, charming in companionship, without rebuff.

And for whoever seeks to embrace both flanks, Shakir

Sways like a bān-tree shoot, in waist and stature.

And every person whose heart is empty of love—

To me, that person is like unyielding stone.
