O you, for whom the arts of adab are the finest trait,
O you whose finest trait is literary learning,
and whose tongue therein is the greatest cameleer-chanter,
and whose tongue is the greatest singer in that art,

why do I see you secluded, hiding yourself,
while we stand watch for your arrival?

How can you remain where you are, now that our prince has come—
How can you stay put when our emir has arrived,
the lord of perfection, the master of generous men?
the master of perfection and lord of glories?

And it is strange that you remain in an encampment

from whose ruins you have gained none of what you desired.

So give up clinging to familiar haunts, and seize
the sight of Bashir Shihab, the guiding light.
a sight of Bashir Shihab, the light of the Guide.

Let all the time you have spent and all you have heard suffice—
You have spent enough time and heard enough
the voice of a newborn and the lady of the gathering.
of a newborn's voice and that of a gathering's mistress.

Hurry, then, and hasten, that you may return honored,
So hasten and hurry, that you may return honored
when you kiss the noble, bountiful hand.
when you kiss the noble, bountiful hand.
