My zeal and my longing have worn my body away through their inclination
My ardour and her ardour outside my body bend
Toward the beloved; their union has exhausted me.
Towards the beloved while my consciousness aligns with them

ليليmy night وليلىand Layla نفاbanished نوميmy sleep اختلافهماtheir disparity
Leave me and my beloved, for redress from those two is hard:
Forbear and forbear for their vengeance has become dear
My night and Layla—their disparity has banished my sleep,
Layla and Layla, their difference has disturbed my sleep
بالطولin length والطولand bounty ياO طوبىbliss لوif only اعتدلاthey both were balanced
In length and bounty—oh, bliss if only they were balanced!
With longing, with longing oh happiness if only they reconciled
So if I wronged a watcher in passion I would make amends
فلوso if ظلمتI wronged رقيباa watcher بالهوىthrough love عدلتshe acted justly

Had I wronged a watcher through love, she would have acted justly;
And if I came to union though I delayed I would make amends
And when I came seeking union, she so often turned away.
So look upon the tribulations of love and see what they have done

يجودis generous بالطولwith length ليليmy night كلماwhenever بخلتshe was stingy
So look at love’s vicissitudes—what they have done:
Layla is generous with longing whenever I am miserly
My night lavishes length whenever
And though Layla is generous with it, she is miserly in her generosity
بالطولwith bounty ليلىLayla وانand if جادتshe was generous بهwith it بخلاit grew stingy
Layla withholds bounty; and if she bestows it, my night grows stingy.
