وحكى الورد بخد وعرار
I said to the grammarian who surpassed the gazelles,

And narrated the rose with a cheek and a temple:
أيهاO you الأخذwho take قلبيmy heart مغنماas booty

بلحاظٍ فاتناتٍ ونفار
O you who seize my heart as booty,
“O you who have taken my heart as booty
With bewitching glances and coy flight,
With a charming, coquettish glance and aversion -

Stop, and do not flee when you see me
Stop and do not shy away when you see me
Standing in a posture of abasement and brokenness.
Standing with the stance of humiliation and despair -

إنindeed حرفthe particle العينof the eye واللَهby God لجارsurely governs the genitive
إن حرف العين واللَه لجار
And draw out your tresses over an eye that has streamed:
And let the branch flow over the eye that shed tears
For the particle before “eye,” by God, surely governs the genitive.
If the letter ‘ain and Allah's name harm.”
