He appeared, shining beneath the thin tunic and mantle:
The gazelle penetrated the heart of the lover with love
A gazelle who conquered the lover's heart with his figure.
And appeared with a mole above the chair of his cheek

On the softness that calls hearts to passion
By surprise, it summons hearts to passion.

So, from the roses of his cheeks and the twin lāms of his cheek-down,
I have spent the night reciting the lamentations of al-Wardi
Indeed, I spent the night reading the commentary on al-Wardi's Lāmiyya.

How strange! I long for him while he is present,
And ask about him while he rests in my innermost being
And ask after him while he grazes within my liver.

The morning we shook hands in pledge
The morning we placed hand in hand in pledge.

'Through my body's clarity, your image appeared in my forearm.'

By chance, shoot the heart with deliberate aim.

A law for lovers, so judge by restoration
A law for lovers that would order its return?

And reap the fruits of union from the garden of promise?

By your life, love is sweet to taste,
If not bitter with separation or prevention
If there is no bitterness of parting or rejection.

How many a night I passed in yearning,
Others in gloom and sleeplessness
In joy—or another in sorrow and sleeplessness.

As I tasted its turmoil during separation.

The bitterest love is a young man's longing and turmoil,
With passion and longing to one without affection
In passion and yearning for one who bears no affection.

A prince who rose in rank and grew in majesty,
Overflowed with manliness, generosity and aid
And overflowed in waves of noble virtue and bounty.

His hand became a reviver of suppliants through his generosity,
And punished the enemy with swords and spears
And an issuer of rulings to foes with straight lances and Indian steel.

Now say to a money-changer counting his gifts:
As though confining the tumultuous sea with counting
'When has the vast sea ever been measured by counting?'

In time of peace, you see him the gentlest speaker,
And fierce as a rose-colored lion during wars
And on the day of war he roars like a tawny lion.

Thus rain, when his hands lavish bounty,
And when he unsheathes the sword from its scabbard
And a lion when he draws the keen sword from its sheath.
