Enough for me—longing has set my heart ablaze,
My longing has set my inner self aflame
And separation has stoked the fires of my passion and anguish.
And kindled the embers of my passion and torment

O you who ask about the flood from my eyelid and my bewilderment,
When asked about the outpouring of my eyelids and confusion
My eye’s tears flowed from parting with my beloved,
My tears flowed from the separation of my beloved

So my day became as black as my night.
Thus my days turned pitch black like my nights
A gazelle of beauty, whose bounty bestowed nothing
A gazelle of beauty who was not magnanimous

On a lovesick one but love’s deadly ravages and her assault.
To a passionate lover except for the tyranny of love and its struggle
My night resembled a tress resting upon her sash;
My night narrated a tale of her departing tents

So it lengthened until, in its morning, there appeared to me
So it was prolonged until her morning shone upon me
My youth, seen in the mirror of my gray hair.
And my youth was visible in the greyness of my hair

An oryx who charged at lovers with a brown lance,
A seducer to lovers, she came robed in black
And laid the gardens’ varied boughs low with green;
And wanted to turn the meadows green

With a rose whose cheeks invited me to yellowness
So do not marvel if my tears flow red,
So wonder not if my tears flowed red

And do not ask about the flooding rivers of my eye.
And ask not about the outpouring of my tearful eyes
She has indeed taken my liver captive, and its bonds were tightened
She has captured my liver and bound it tightly

With the rope of love for her; no release can be hoped for.
With the rope of her love from which escape is hopeless
Who, then, can bring me her whose girdle is a gathering of glances?
So who can release the gathered ends of her glances?

I forsook sleep when parting from her overwhelmed me,
She deserted me when her separation painted me
And my lengthening exile compounded estrangement.
And increased the exile of my prolonged estrangement

The faithful and my reproachers have indeed felt pity for me,
Those true of faith have been kind and forgiving to me
And my baggage and my dwelling felt compassion for what I endure.
And sympathized now that I have left my encampment and dwellings

And since time shattered me in all I hoped for,
And since the days have ruptured every hopeful
I became certain of it: joy would fade away,
I grew certain that joy will shine through

For my cares have descended heavily.
Because my sorrows have heavily burdened me
