O gazelle of the moringa, among the laurels and dragon trees,

Grazing on my very life—cease reproach; do not blame me.

And sheathe the sword of an eyelid with which you have spilled

My blood without a qualm—who declared my blood lawful to shed?

You have become my heart's neighbor: be gentle with it, spare it ruin.

For the noble defend their neighbors.

Nay, fear God for a passionate lover, a brother to suffering,

Whom nothing has healed but kissing the earring and nose-rings.

And be gentle in tormenting one possessed of sorrow,

Who has been enamored of nothing but your radiant face.

I am love's suckling; never will I desist,

And the suckling of chaste love is never weaned.

Who will help me with a coy beauty? If I am smitten, she is not

Smitten; and if I seek nearness, she does not seek it.

Radiant, with the full moon's blush, when she reveals

The finest smiling mouth, arrayed with pearls.

In loving her I bared my secret, and my blood was cheapened.

And my patience is spent; for what is past, behold my remorse.

A houri: the lids of her eye have wrought

Upon my heart what a keen blade does to a reed pen.

And the ambergris of her beauty mark, in her cheek's rosy hue,

Wards off a kisser's kiss with the scorpion of her temple-lock.

What are the two full moons when she appears, or dawn when she unveils?

Like the sun, since she gleamed amid the pitch-black gloom.

What is musk when she wafts fragrance, or the gazelle when she roams?

What is a sword when she gazes, with languor in her glance?

    In her palm is a snare that hunts hearts;

And how many a heart has come to pain through those two!

She came making me swallow rejection; I said to her,

Be lavish with whatever you wish; I do not care.

No—nothing is sweet to me after your beauty,

Except my praise of Shadid, whose virtues are manifest.

I mean the son of As'ad, who attained the heights and excelled

In the bounty of a hand that rivals downpours of steady rain.

A noble, illustrious man: when he brandishes his spear

Or charges in battle, he makes you forget every armored champion.

And if he appears as a phantom to his foes, they are routed

In fear, and become meat upon a butcher's block.

Sweet in his wit in peacetime, endowed with generosity,

And on the day of stifled wrath, fierce in might, proud in spirit.

He slakes the spears with blood on the day of spear-thrusting; and if

The swords thirst, he plunges into the battle.

If you mention Amr's boldness, the sword replies:

“Set Amr aside, and the people of ages long past.”

This is the son of As'ad; his station is in the heights,

As though he were a banner on a mountain's crest.

A full moon whose rising soars in generosity's heaven,

And in the gardens of praise every mouth sings of him.

Before him the men of the most generous have alighted; and if

You turn toward [unclear], you gain from his fragrance.

In every land we see an outpouring from his palm,

As though it were yoked to a raging downpour.

When beheld, he is like Ahnaf in forbearance,

And in intelligence, Iyas—a mine of wisdom.

Excellence now shines forth in him, rejoicing,

And glory extols him, lofty in aspiration.

O Shadid, fierce in combat at the meeting of the

Two hosts upon the battlefield, O faithful keeper of pledges!

From me to you the bride of praise approaches,

Bashfully, while she enjoys blessings from both your palms.

So live on in good fortune and glory as long as a lovesick man sings:

O gazelle of the moringa, among the laurels and dragon trees.
