محرمَthe inner sanctum of الكاسthe cup فشاعتand so it became manifest منظراin appearance
محرمَ الكاس فشاعت منظرا
Do not be like wine, which gave its color
Be not like wine that lends its hue
to the cup’s inner sanctum, and so became plain to see.
And makes the cup a joy to view,
بلrather كنِbe الماءwater بلاwithout لونa color يرىthat can be seen
بل كنِ الماء بلا لون يرى
آخذاًtaking منfrom كلevery كاسٍcup مظهراan appearance
آخذاً من كل كاسٍ مظهرا
Rather, be water, with no visible color,
But rather be like water, pure,
taking its appearance from every cup.
That borrows tint to none obscure.
