بيوم عنيزةٍ إذ قلت شعرا
Come, son of Kulthum, give up your boasting
about the day of ʿUnayzah, when you recited verse.
لقدindeed جادتexcelled اسابرناour hawks صحاءًapparently hale and sound; unusual form
لقد جادت اسابرنا صحاءً
بيومon the day of شميسةٍShumaysah كرّاًcharging وفرّاand retreating
بيوم شميسةٍ كرّاً وفرّا
Our hawks indeed excelled, hale and sound,
on the day of Shumaysah, charging and retreating.
سللنthey unsheathed صوارمthe keen swords of الأجناحthe wings بيضاًwhite
سللن صوارم الأجناح بيضاً
فعادتso they returned منfrom دمthe blood of الحجلاتthe partridges حمراred
فعادت من دم الحجلات حمرا
They unsheathed the swords of their wings, white,
and these returned red with the partridges’ blood.
