Cease, for the cloud of my eyelid has poured rain.

And be gracious: what I have endured from you is enough.

Will you not pity the plight of one bewitched by passion, one

who has never once grown attached to any love but yours?

My bed has felt pity for me at bedtime, just as

my reproacher has softened toward me when I weep in anguish.

Who will bring me the woman with bewitching eyes, swaying her

flanks? Her slender stature resembled an alif.

I have not forgotten when she came, trembling with longing,

before her lover, bending her figure in ardor.

She swayed like a bough crowned by full moons, having gained

two jutting forms of crystal that stole the gaze.

O my two reproachers, leave me, for love is my ruin.

Nor do I heed reproach, so cease your excess.

And console me with remembrance of her and her familiar dwelling,

and gladden one enamored of her, sick with love.

Our loved ones, how fares the pledge with you?

Indeed, the heart has not broken faith in love.

For whoever saw my burning anguish in longing perceived

my sincerity; love grew fierce within him and seized his heart.

And if the full moon of night beheld your radiant face,

it would return veiled, or depart eclipsed.

And my longing found patience unbearable when I was kept far away,

and my heart was forced to forget; no pity came from

my tormentor. By nights gone by in love,

and by the wine of lips we sipped, which proved a cure,

my eyelid has savored no sleep since your departure.

No—the herald of sleep has not appeared before my eye.

But, by love, I have spent the night restless,

answering the gray doves in lament whenever they call.

    Far from it! Not every lover, my brother, has perished;

no, nor has every beloved kept faith in passion.
