By God, O gazelles of Rum, if the east wind has danced
By Allah, O does of Rome, if I played
among your curves, swaying gracefully,
Among your cloaks, youthfulness revived,

Morning shone and flashed on flowing water,

Kind to a lover since the days of my youth,
love’s fire has kindled a flame within his breast.

The softness of her mouth in her charms
spending the night longing to meet, awaiting the pre-dawn gloom.

Her saliva honeyed, her yearning fragrant,
Her saliva honeyed, her fragrance a balm,
she heals every sorrow with her wine-like lips.
That heals with wine every sorrow,

She longs for me as I long for her, and if
she sets out, she says, “Perhaps I shall see him—perhaps!”
She walks, she says, may I see him, may I,

Secluded, never seen by the sun out in the open,
Veiled, unseen by the sun, appearing
she visited without appointment, fearing no guards.

We spent the night, my forearm a sash around her curves,
With chastity and faith in her cloaks
and the full moon of her forehead knew no stain.
And a moon whose radiance knows no stain.
