Bubbles floated on the cup's heady wine
The bubbles circled the wineglass,
before dawn, and revived the souls of the seated companions.
Casting a spell to enliven the gathering,
صهباءtawny wine تهديbestows للنفوسupon souls نفائساtreasures
صهباء تهدي للنفوس نفائسا
تجليdispels ببهجتهاwith its radiance دجىthe darkness of الأغلاسthe predawn hours
تجلي ببهجتها دجى الأغلاس
Tawny wine bestows treasures upon souls,
Golden, bestowing exquisite pleasures upon souls,
dispelling with its radiance the predawn gloom.
Illuminating the gloom of sorrows with its radiance.
قدindeed همتI became love-maddened وجداwith longing مذsince رايتI saw سناءهاits radiance
قد همت وجدا مذ رايت سناءها
بالكاسin the cup يحكيresembles شعلةthe flame of النبراسthe lamp
بالكاس يحكي شعلة النبراس
I have been mad with longing since I saw its radiance
My passion was stirred when I saw its brilliance
in the cup, resembling a lamp's flame.
In the glass, relating the glow of embers.
فدخلتso I entered روضةthe garden of حانهاits tavern معwith أهيفa slender-waisted beauty
فدخلت روضة حانها مع أهيف
يسبيcaptivates بدورthe moons of التمfullness ظبيa gazelle كناسa thicket refuge
يسبي بدور التم ظبي كناس
So I entered its tavern's garden with a slender-waisted beauty,
So I entered a garden, welcomed by a loved one
a gazelle of the thicket who enthralls the full moons.
Who captivates with a fawn-like grace.
ذوpossessing غرةa radiant brow كالبدرlike the full moon تشرقshines رونقاwith splendor
ذو غرة كالبدر تشرق رونقا
منfrom تحتbeneath طرتهhis forelock كماlike المقباسa firebrand
من تحت طرته كما المقباس
His brow, like the full moon, shines with splendor
With a face like the full moon beaming
from beneath his forelock, like a firebrand.
Beneath his crown, as a torch.
قدindeed زجhurled عنfrom قوسthe bow of الحواجبthe eyebrows اسهماarrows
قد زج عن قوس الحواجب اسهما
منfrom نبلthe shafts of طرفa gaze فاترlanguid نعّاسdrowsy
من نبل طرف فاتر نعّاس
He hurled arrows from the bow of his brows,
He shot arrows from the bow of his eyebrows
from the shafts of a languid, drowsy gaze.
From the skill of a languid, sleepy glance.
ولحاظهand his glances قدalready أشهرتunsheathed أسيافهاtheir swords
ولحاظه قد أشهرت أسيافها
وغدتand began توسوسto whisper فيin صدورthe breasts of الناسpeople
وغدت توسوس في صدور الناس
And his glances have unsheathed their swords
His glances unsheathed their swords,
and begun whispering in people's breasts.
Whispering in the hearts of people.
وبخدهand on his cheek وردa blossom of البهارthe oxeye daisy يصونهguards it
وبخده ورد البهار يصونه
خالa mole تسترconcealed itself فيin رياضthe gardens of الآسmyrtle
خال تستر في رياض الآس
And on his cheek a daisy blossom is guarded
On his cheek, the fresh rose protected
by a mole concealed in gardens of myrtle.
A beauty spot hiding in gardens of delight.
فطفقتso I began اسقيهgiving him drink رحيقthe nectar of سلافةchoice wine
فطفقت اسقيه رحيق سلافة
لعبتplayed باسمرwith the tawny spear of قدّهhis figure المياسgracefully swaying
لعبت باسمر قدّه المياس
So I began serving him the nectar of choice wine
I began to give him the wine’s pure nectar,
that toyed with the tawny spear of his swaying form.
Playing with the wine-bearer’s bent elbow.
فافترّthen he smiled عنrevealing درpearls وساقطand scattered لؤلوءاًpearls
فافترّ عن در وساقط لؤلوءاً
منfrom خاتمa ring (his mouth) عطرfragrant زكيsweet-scented الأنفاسbreaths
من خاتم عطر زكي الأنفاس
Then he smiled, baring pearls, and scattered pearls
He let fall pearls and drops of dew
from a fragrant ring, sweet of breath.
From a signet ring of sweet-smelling breath.
فدنوتso I drew near منهto him كيin order to أقبلkiss ثغرهhis mouth
فدنوت منه كي أقبل ثغره
واضمand embrace قدّاa figure ماسswayed باستئناسwith familiar ease
واضم قدّا ماس باستئناس
So I drew close to him to kiss his mouth
I drew near to kiss his lips
and embrace a form that swayed with familiar ease.
And embrace a curving waist to my delight.
فدناthen drew near الرقيبthe watcher مفاجئاunexpectedly فتركتso I abandoned ماwhat
فدنا الرقيب مفاجئا فتركت ما
املتهI hoped for it لاno بلrather تركتI abandoned حواسيmy senses
املته لا بل تركت حواسي
Then the watcher came near without warning, and I abandoned what
But the watchman approached suddenly, so I left
I had hoped for—no, rather, I lost my senses.
What I hoped for, indeed, left my senses,
واستنفرand was frightened off المحبوبthe beloved منهby him حينماwhen
واستنفر المحبوب منه حينما
وافىhe arrived وفاءthe coming of الأنسhumankind للأدجاسto the jinn
وافى وفاء الأنس للأدجاس
And the beloved was frightened off by him when
And my beloved was roused to action when
he came as humans come upon the jinn.
He arrived to show loyalty to the gathering.
ورأيتand I saw مذsince وافىarrived الرقيبthe watcher قساوةharshness
ورأيت مذ وافى الرقيب قساوة
هاجتsurged بقلبيin my heart منfrom عذولa reproacher قاسيharsh
هاجت بقلبي من عذول قاسي
And when the watcher arrived, I felt a harshness
Yet I saw, when the watchman came, cruelty
stirred in my heart by a cruel reproacher.
Stirring in my heart from his harsh aloofness,
وافتضand broke up مجلسناour gathering ونحنwhile we بلوعةin anguish
وافتض مجلسنا ونحن بلوعة
علقتclung بناto us منfrom ذلكthat الخناسslinking whisperer
علقت بنا من ذلك الخناس
And he broke up our gathering, while we were in anguish
And he ruined our assembly while we felt
that clung to us from that slinking whisperer.
Afflicted by that sneering fool.
