    O brother of my soul, we have indeed remained

    Since you departed, in distress and anxious thought.

    عجبا لم يأتنا منكم خبر

    And my heart and thoughts are now with you;

    How strange—no news has reached us from you!

    So may the house be sound, free of

    Trouble or damage that brings distress.

    And may the roof, along with its timbers,

    Be safe from every misfortune and danger.

    And may the provisions be kept safe, with no loss

    Of any of them; and may there be no harm.

    So give the one whose mind is troubled some news

    Of what has happened and whatever has arisen.

    كل سوء وعناء وعثر

    God has indeed shielded you from wrath and from

    Every evil, hardship, and mishap;

    And may God protect you from every affliction,

    And shield you from the ravages of rain.

    How could one who builds verses of pearls

    Have his house of stone demolished by God?

    May God keep the poets’ houses flourishing,

    And bestow on them every grace that flows down.
