O thief of sleep from my eyes—what plunder!
O thief of sleep from my eyes, what was stolen
Enough for you: you have kindled the flame in our very depths

From the arrows of your thick-lashed eye—alas, my anguish!
And who will rescue me when I cry, “Woe is me!”
And who will shelter me when I cry, 'Oh, woe!'?

You knew that I was a man of yearning, possessed by passion;
You knew I was a man of longing, possessed of ardent love;
so you began to toy with me—how strange; oh, what a wonder!
so you began to toy with me out of conceit—oh, how astonishing!

My heart alone is torment enough, whether you grant or

You two have led me, O my eye and O my heart,
You two have brought me, O my eye and my liver,
into this passion—so taste its honey and its froth.
into this passion; so taste the honey and the suffering.
