The occupant of this grave was indeed a man of honor,
The occupant of this tomb was a man of honor
exalted throughout time, never brought low.
Elevated through time, never abased
لاقىmet المنيةdeath فيat التسعينninety متشحاًcloaked
لاقى المنية في التسعين متشحاً
برّgoodness الفضائلthe virtues فيin عمدٍdeliberate intent وفيand in عرضِcircumstance
برّ الفضائل في عمدٍ وفي عرضِ
He met death at ninety, cloaked
He met his death at ninety years of age
in the goodness of virtues, in intent and circumstance.
Cloaked in virtues, upright and steadfast
أولتbestowed ولايتهhis rule لبنانLebanon طيبpleasant ثناًpraise
أولت ولايته لبنان طيب ثناً
وشادand rebuilt بالعدلthrough justice فيهin it كلall منتقضruined
وشاد بالعدل فيه كل منتقض
His rule bestowed fair praise on Lebanon,
Lebanon sang his rule's praises
and through justice rebuilt there all that lay in ruins.
And he built justice where wrongs were rife
فهوfor he is الأميرthe emir الشهابيal-Shihabi البشيرBashir ومَنand one who
فهو الأمير الشهابي البشير ومَن
غيرother than العلىlofty honor لمnot يكنbe يرتادseek منany غرضaim
غير العلى لم يكن يرتاد من غرض
For he is Emir Bashir al-Shihabi, and one
He was the Shihabi prince Bashir, and none
who sought no aim other than lofty honor.
But the lofty ever fixed his purpose
قضىdied فأظلمتand grew dark الدنياthe world مؤرخةًrecording the date
قضى فأظلمت الدنيا مؤرخةً
أماas for البشيرBashir شهابٌa shooting star بالجنانin Paradise’s gardens يضيshines
أما البشير شهابٌ بالجنان يضي
He died, and the world grew dark, recording the date:
His time done, the world was darkened
As for Bashir, he is a shooting star shining in Paradise’s gardens.
But Bashir Shihabs in Paradise shine bright
