قالوا تسلَّ أما أبصرت عارضةً
فيon الخدthe cheek أخضرgreen قلتI said النَّفسthe soul خضراءgreen
في الخد أخضر قلت النَّفس خضراء
They said, “Let go of your love—have you not seen the downy growth
green upon the cheek?” I said, “The soul is green.”
وكيفAnd how يقبلcould accept منهمfrom them عاشقa lover عذلاreproach
وكيف يقبل منهم عاشق عذلا
والعاذلونAnd the reproachers لأهلto the people of العشقlove أعداءenemies
والعاذلون لأهل العشق أعداء
And how could a lover accept their reproach,
when those who reproach are enemies of the people of love?
