بالشام والنفس عندها ضجرة
The cold has prolonged its stay
The cold has lingered in Damascus
In Syria, and the soul is vexed by its stay.
With a weary soul that's growing restless

وقلت إذ شاب منه مفرقه

بالثلج يا برد شاخت العشرة
And I said, when its crown turned gray from the cold
As it frosts over every parting
With snow: “O cold, our companionship has grown old!”
O cold! The group is breaking asunder
