قالواthey said تسلَّconsole yourself أماhave you not أبصرتseen عارضةًcheek down
قالوا تسلَّ أما أبصرت عارضةً
فيupon الخدthe cheek أخضرgreen قلتI said النَّفسthe soul خضراءgreen (full of desire)
في الخد أخضر قلت النَّفس خضراء
They said, “Console yourself! Have you not seen the down
green upon his cheek?” I said, “My soul is green.”
وكيفand how يقبلaccepts منهمfrom them عاشقa lover عذلاreproach
وكيف يقبل منهم عاشق عذلا
والعاذلونand the reproachers لأهلto the people of العشقpassionate love أعداءenemies
والعاذلون لأهل العشق أعداء
And how can a lover accept reproach from them,
when reproachers are enemies to those in love?
