ولماand when بدَاhe appeared والليلُand the night أسْوَدُblack فاحمٌcoal-black
ولما بدَا والليلُ أسْوَدُ فاحمٌ
قدْhad انْتَشَرتspread فيacross الخافقَينِthe two horizons ذَوائبهْits tresses
قدْ انْتَشَرت في الخافقَينِ ذَوائبهْ
And when he appeared, while the night was black as coal,
When the black night appeared cloaked in darkness
its tresses having spread across the eastern and western horizons,
Its folds spread across the horizons
أضاءhe illuminated ببَدْرwith the full moon of الثغرthe mouth عنْدَat ابتسامهِhis smiling
أضاء ببَدْر الثغر عنْدَ ابتسامهِ
دجىthe darkness of الليلthe night حتىuntil نظمstrung الجزعهthe onyx bead ثاقبهits piercer
دجى الليل حتى نظم الجزعه ثاقبه
he illuminated, with the full moon of his mouth as he smiled,
His smile illuminated the darkness of night
the night's darkness, until the onyx bead's piercer could string it.
