قالوا اترك الخمر واجتنبها

قالوا اترك الخمر واجتنبها

لا تتعد الحرام حدا

لا تتعد الحرام حدا

They said: Give up wine and shun it;

They told me, leave the wine and abstain from it

Do not cross the bounds of what is forbidden.

Do not transgress the forbidden boundary

قلت أراها للروح قوتاً

قلت أراها للروح قوتاً

وطلب القوت ما تعدى

وطلب القوت ما تعدى

I said: I see it as sustenance for the soul,

I said, I see it as strength for the soul

And seeking sustenance is no transgression.

And seeking strength is not transgression
