أَتانيcame to me الغُلامُthe youth وَماand did not قَصَّراfall short
يُديرُpasses around المَدامَةَthe wine مُستَبشِراrejoicing
The youth came to me and did not stint,
passing the wine around, rejoicing.
وَياand oh حَبَّذاhow delightful الراحُthe wine مِنfrom شادِنٍa young gazelle
سَكَرتُI became drunk بِهِon him قَبلَbefore أَنto أَسكَراI become drunk
And oh, how delightful the wine from a young gazelle!
I was drunk on him before I grew drunk.
غَزالٌa gazelle غَزاraided طَرفُهُhis glance فيthrough القُلوبِhearts
فَلِلَهِand by God كَمhow many عاشِقٍa lover أَسَّراhe took captive
A gazelle whose glance went raiding through hearts—
and by God, how many lovers he took captive!
إِذاwhen ماever نَظَرتُI looked إِلىat غَيرِهِanyone other than him
دَعانيcalled me هَواهُlove for him إِلىto ماwhat جَرىhad happened
Whenever I look at anyone else,
love for him draws me back to what has passed.

And a gazelle—when he draws the sword of his glances,
the lions of al-Sharā long for safety.
وَشَمسُand the sun المُدامَةِof wine فيin كَفِّهِhis palm

And the sun of wine in his palm
wafts ambergris fragrance, like his saliva.
نديميَّmy two drinking companions حثاhasten along, you two كبارthe large الكؤوسcups
فإنfor indeed المؤذنthe muezzin قدalready كبّراproclaimed 'God is greatest'
My two drinking companions, hurry round the large cups,
for the muezzin has already cried, 'God is greatest!'
مُعَتَّقَةًwell-aged مِنfrom هَداياthe gifts القسوسof priests
تَجلُّit is exalted عَنِbeyond الوَصفِdescription أَنto تشتَرىbe bought
Aged wine, among the gifts of priests,
too sublime for description or purchase.
لَقَدindeed كُنتُI was بالروحِwith the soul أَبتاعُهاI buy it
مِنَfrom القِسِّthe priest لَوif خَيَّرَhe gave a choice to المُشتَرىthe buyer
I would indeed have bought it with my soul
from the priest, had he given the buyer a choice.
لَحانيreproached me العَذولُthe reprover عَلىfor شُربِهاdrinking it
فَأَضحىso became ولوعيmy passion بِهاfor it أَكثَراgreater
The reprover blamed me for drinking it,
so my passion for it grew greater.
وَقالand he said أَتَشربُهاdo you drink it?
فَقُلتُso I said نَعَمyes أَشرَبُI drink المنكَراthe forbidden thing
And he asked disapprovingly, 'Do you drink it?'
So I said, 'Yes, I drink the forbidden.'
إِلَيكَaway with you عَذوليmy reprover فَإِنّيfor I am فَتىًa young man
أَرىI see فيin المَدامَةِwine ماwhat لاnot تَرىyou see
Away with you, my reprover, for I am a young man
who sees in wine what you do not see.
جَعَلتُI made لِروحيfor my soul ريحthe fragrance النديمِof the drinking companion
فَداهاa ransom for it وَأَرواحُand the souls كُلِّall الوَرىcreation
For my soul, I have made the drinking companion's fragrance
its ransom, along with the souls of all creation.
